I have just completed my time as a resident at the Gordon Moody Association in Beckenham. Before I came here I was in a very bad place; stealing, bank loans, maxing out credit cards. All this thanks to decades of compulsive gambling. Ultimately I attempted suicide.
I’m leaving here a better person, i’m more open minded and have developed an awareness of what led to my problem. The staff at Gordon Moody are great; non judgemental, firm but fair. The programme isn’t easy, many tears were shed along the way, lots of soul searching done. But with determination and a willingness to listen, being prepared to leave my comfort zone, I have grown up. I’ve come through the dark times and can see light at the end of the tunnel. This goes for anyone who enters recovery, if you want it badly enough, you can do it..
Yet you can’t do it alone. Think of all you have lost already, if you are reading this and wondering about whether stopping gambling is for you, take it from me that it is worth it. Don’t end up like I did before I got on the ‚phone to Gordon Moody and my life took a turn for the better. Onwards and upwards

well i passed 2nd interview .and last night got phone call to say i got the job;that was the news i wanted and i start on the 20aug.on the 9aug i renew my wedding vows followed by 7days hol in scotland,weather in blackpool awfull.i hope every bodys journey is going well,and will post again soon

well another year over.and a new one begins,had a great xmas and a nice new year,got very emotional on new year eve,memorys of the past year came back,and it was probably saying how far ive come,that i took time to reflect on past history for a few mins.but now onwards and upwards,and carry on rebuilding,glad to see the back of xmas food,and to get back to the normal,hope you all had a good xmas and have a great year ahead.just been on the road to pick my grandsons birthday card and noticed in local bookies window come inside for great give aways,laughed to myself and thought they shuold rephrase it.TO COME INSIDE ANDGIVE YOUR CASH AWAY.good bless for now

Dear Bonkers
As long as you keep that moon up there for the stragglers to see you will be a beacon in a dark night – even if a strange colour. I have never been to Blackpool, wet or dry but it sounds worth a visit if only to see that blue Moon and a Bonkers special person enjoying his life.  
I love to hear there is a spring in the step of the ex res and look forward to news of the February reunion – I only wish I could be there. So much optimism and courage all together in one place.   I’m not sure I can match that apart from country dancing on Monday evenings where optimism reigns that I ‘might’ get the right step and courage for when I hear my name yelled again as I grab the wrong partner – who probably will need more courage than me!
I am glad you have passed the one year mark – I know it is just one day but I am delighted to congratulate you and say how proud it makes me to read about your success.   In case you are wondering why I should be proud, as the success is yours, I find I am proud of each and every CG who turns their life around.   As a non-CGs I cannot know how I would have dealt with the addiction if I had owned it.   I would like to think I would have had the courage that you and my CG have shown.   As it is I only admire from the sidelines those who take the leap of faith and join in with the happiness that control brings.

hi all,sorry i havent posted for a few weeks,been a little hectic work wise ,and  ive had a bad virus bug thats had me in  bed last 4 days,im off to london on monday,to see everyone at gordon *****,and to attend monthly out reach meeting.its a year since i had my treatment,and when i lookback i dont know how i can ever repay thier help they gave me,my reason for going is to show them thier help is still needed, and show them ,hope fully that thier work has made me a better person.i feel excited about the trip.gambling wise nothing to report,i dont think about it anymore,and now its just part of my past,but always cautious that it doesnt return.LOOBY LOO,VELVET,GOING TO DO SOME MORE DANCING IN THE ISLES,GOING TO SEE THE JERSEY BOYS IN LONDON IN MAY.AND JUST HAD A LETTER FROM SOUTHPORT ABOUT SOLID GOLD SIXTIES NIGHT IN END OF FEB,fancy a boogie you 2.I WILL LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW LONDON GOES NEXT WEEK,UNTILL THEN.

Good morning Bonkers,
Good to hear form you and that things arg going good, in spite of the illness and hectic work — some of the everyday disappoinment that still happen when we don’t gamble, but in not gambling we can handle them better.
In recovery the ones finding the help they need do not have to pay back anything, instead we have found that we pay forward to others that are coming for help after us. A catch phrase started by those in recovery, yet has somehow now filtered into other activities, even in commercials for the lottery here in the Sates; but nevertheless "Paying it Forward" is all that we can do when paying back is not expected or even possible — it is like moving "Onwards and upwards, and not back.
Enjoy your time in London.  I was fortunate to have seen two shows there, the theatre offers a much better form of enjoyment and any needed time of escape from our worries than gambling ever did or could.  And get all you can out of your outreach meeting, keep aware of what you need, where you are, and how you got there — stopping gambling is not hard, staying stopped is what ***** our diligent work and unwavering desire.

well not one of my best weeks,waiting to hear if i will keep my job,or maybe lose it after firm decided to do some health checks,i have a pacemaker which i decided not to tell them,so they are waiting report from doctors,but what will be will be.my youngest daughter had a baby girl on saturday,we havent spoke for 2 years,owing to her way of life im not happy with,so feel a bit put out ,wont let me see grand daughter, but again its her choice and should she change her mind .she knows were i am.now for some postive news,no gambling problems alls well on that *****,and going to a mowtown show in southport on saturday.see you thier LOOBY LOO,VELVET. and we will dance the night away.

‚Hope all goes well with your job Bonkers. If you are able to carry out your duties you should get a favourable medical report. I can see why you didnt tell them about the pacemaker…I was sent to Occ Health last year and like a fool revealed too much. It was all slapped up to me at a "feedback" meeting with admin. Suffice to say the doc in Occ Health was very apologetic when I went back to confront her for breach of confidentiality. She said it wont happen again….It sure won’t because my union rep will be with me next time.  Are you in a Union B?
Congrats on the birth of your grand daughter. Try to see her so you two can bond when she is still "new!"

***** everyone,hope you are all well,got back home last night from calpe in spain,had 10days out thier with my wife lesley,it was the best break in years,we got on so well,the past years of gambling forgotten,the hurt slowly moving away,and allthough we both know never to, forget entirely.life is so good now for us both,got a nice tan, and ready to go back to work on monday with a smile.job is safe now after a long wait,and ive seen my new grandauhter,i tried to put things behind what happend in the past,and hopefully now after 3years we can know have a father and daughter relationship.so for myself i feel im now in a good position in my life,and through all my freinds at gordon *****,and my forum freinds,i thank you all,so for now have a good week,and let those small steps become big ones

What a lovely update. So glad you enjoyed your break away and your job is safe 🙂 You are right, you should never forget, but you are living proof that life can be good, if recovery is embraced fully. Get on with your life as best you can knowing that your continued recovery is in your hands. I am glad you have seen your grandaughter and hopefully over time the wounds can be healed(our new grandson is due in less than 4 weeks too – special *****). On the music front we are off to see The Jersey Boys in London on Sunday, with a pre-show dinner and travel all paid for – a gift from a few family/friends for our 30th Wedding Anniversary a couple of weeks ago, so looking forward to it. hi all,just a few lines to let you know whats happening,went to Wembley last week to see my beloved man city win the cup.lesley was their as well and we had a great time with all the blues,then it was back to work were we are having a major redevelpoement with new changing rooms ato match our state of the art gym.so very busy fhier,its Monday so im on line with g moody,i get a lot out of it,and like to listen how others are progressing.goimg to a show on Saturday with Lesley,musis Frankie valie.so that’s all my end love to all.bonkers x

4 years ago myself and Lesley went to scarboro,it was when my gambling had got out of control,we didn’t enjoy it,i was lying and hiding my gambling problem,lesley new I was not telling the truth,and the holiday was a disaster,but on our return,we have put all our troubles behind us and had a lovely time,what a difference 4 years can make.and I hope that sends a message out to those who are struggling,thier is light at the end of the tunnel,you just need to tell your love ones the truth,and with help along the way,you will come out the otherside,best wishes bonkers x

on my way to work ,last Wednesday,i bumped into a guy who I new from my gambling days,in conversation I asked him hows the family,he replied I don’t see them much now they have meved to luton,and my wife is divorcing me,and I only see children every other month,it was the gambling and lies,it won in the end ,and now im deep in debt with no way out,i gave him Gordon moodeys number,but he replied I don’t need it,i love betting and I don’t think I could change,so I bid him goodbye,and for a second thought that could have been me,and now I only hope he gets help,

Could be any of us on here if we allow gambling to get us again. I can remember the days when I thought I’d never end up „that bad“ I can also remember the times I’ve slept in bus stops and fields, I’ve put myself in jeopardy of ending back there everytime I have gambled. But thankfully I’m not back in that predicament, and the way to make sure, for any of us, of not ending up there is to carry on living one day at a time without a bet.

hi friends ,haven’t been on for a while.so I will fill you in on whats happened,had a lovely holiday in Portugal with Lesley,it was 2 weeks of lovely sunshine,still working very hard,and most of all,no sign of gambling nearly 3 years now,,health wise,things not to good at the moment,5years ago I had major surgery on my left shoulder.and now im in agony with my right,and after seeing specialist I need the same on my right.but never mind it could be worse,and their are people worse off.i hope alls well with you all,and life is good,so until next time take care and best wishes bonkers

hello friends,just got back a week ago from calpe in spain,myself and Lesley had a lovely time,we are on our way to a move,we have had a offer accepted on a bungalow ,and hope fully fingers crossed in new year we will move in,its a very busy time at work,we have a fit camp weekend goming up,and with xmas weeks away ,ribby hall is almost full every week,apart from a bad shoulder that will need surgery alls well.i hope all my friends on here are all well,i will post again xmas week,untill then ,best wishes bonkers

hi friends, just a quick up date,had a shoulder operation ,just before xmas,and now on the mend and hoping to be back in work in 2 weeks,and moved house on 29th dac,on the sea front at clevelys blackpool,wake up in the morning to the sound of the sea and seagulls.and when I open curtains you see the sea coming in,its our last move ,we are both al,most 6o, so it s our retirement home,,,hope you all had a lovely xmas,and hopefully a great new year ahead,hope vera,geordie,looby loo,are all well,for now good by good luck,,,best wishes bonkers

hi all,
well its all change my end,after having shoulder operation and moving,i decided with Lesley its time to enjoy our life by the sea,im now looking for some partime work just to keep active, having not been to well of late,i realise their is more to life than money,when gambling all that matterd was money now I see things for what they are.having had operation I would like to say it was a success,but sadly that is not the case.im going to visit my friends at Gordon moody on 13 march,and take Michele my counciler for some lunch,it will be great to see the gang,and to talk to some of the residents and see how they are coping,and maybe offer some advice a long the way,if needed,hope alls well with GEORDIE,VERS, PAULINE,LOOBY LOO,AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THE FORUM,for now good by good luck ,will post on my return from london

well how nice it was to see all the gang at Beckenham gmoody,had a nice bit of lunch with Michele my counciler when I was their 3 years ago,without her faith in me I would not be where I am today,i went to the outreach meeting which is run every 2 weeks by david,another person who has always been their for me,it was nice to talk to some guys just finishing their period at Beckenham,and offer some advice where it was needed,and listen to another exresident who now is in happier times,i spent an hour walking around Beckenham remembering the times I had their,even though they were sad times,it is nice now to see how it is in different circumstances,and its a big part of my life,which without doubt led me to be here today,so to all forum friends past and present,and all future residents hang on in their and anything is possible,WITH A BIT OF DEDICATION,and soul searching,good luck and best wishes bonkers

hi all,lovely sunny day in blackpool,and I hope I find you all well,life is good at the moment,still gambling free 3 years and 5 months,,,started anew job 3 weeks ago and its going well,shoulder still not quite right but we cant have everything,sometimes I lokk back,and I cant believe im in this place where life is normal and bookies no longer excist,sadly I realise I was lucky and their are still so many going through the pain we all know,,to them people I can only hope they get help and are able to move on,so for now friends its good by,take care and I will post soon x

I’m well, living in Eastbourne, East Sussex.
Still miss life in Beckenham…loved the structure and support we had there.
I still attend G A and because I found my Father back in February, this rekindled my old triggers (even though its been absolutely brilliant meeting new family, Dad , brothers and sister) have been attending counselling through GamCare since, which has been so helpful. will try and hook up on a Monday with you. Are you in touch with Dave C or anyone else from our time there?

not been on for a few weeks,been on holiday to the Italian lakes,and working till 9 at night during summer holidays,things have calmed down now.and that gives me more time to come on forum,gambling is still a thing of the past,lesley had a big birthday in august,and we went to venice ,and went on a gondolier,iy was my birthday last week,and it was very nice,with a little celebrating meal,life is good,i hope all my friends are doing well,and life is good for you all,take care,i will post again soon,

not been on for awhile,sorry to say health isn’t to good at the moment,
ive reached 60,and now my body has decided to let me know,im waiting to see the specialist forrumatoide artritus,my feet and hands are swelling up and I have terrible burning in my sole of feet,and palm of my hands,and stiffness in all my joints,despite that life goes on and the gambling is now almost 4 years,,,gamble free,,,im back to work this week,been off for a few weeks,since I haven’t been on ,I was sad to hear Geordie you have been poorly,,i do hope your on the mend now,and I also hope all my friends and forum colleagues are doing well,so for now ,

So sorry to hear you have been unwell , Bonkers.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a tricky one. Keep your joints protected. Lots of advice and new medication available. Hope you find one that helps and that you will have long remissions. Green tea, ginger and turmeric are considered helpful but CHECK WITH YOUR GP.
Thank God you’re not gambling That would really put the top hat on everything.
Summer is coming so gentle walking in good weather will keep your spirits up Bonkers.

Wow 4 years is amazing, congratulations, how does time go that fast, i wish i could say the same.. but i cant.
I hope that they find a solution to your health and you are more comfortable. Imagine how sick you would be if you were still gambling

thank you both for your kind words,to vera you are so right,60 is the new 40,and if I was gambling I would certainly lost the will to live at this stage with all that’s going on,but thankfully god is with me ,and gambling is a thing of the past and not my future, and to you P,by your post I feel you may be struggling,but you can do it,if not on your own ,with help from the people on here,or by talking to family,for you P ,the future can be good,just go for it,and hopefully in future posts,your posts will be positive,,if its a listning ear you want,im here just post me
