This is something that is in the GA literature in the Uk that I have found useful. A list of “Just for Todays”
Just For Today
Just for today I will try to live through this day only and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for 12 hours that would appal me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
Just for today I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that: “most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
Just for today I will adjust myself to what is and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take each day as it comes and fit myself to it.
Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out; if anybody knows of it, it will not count; I will do at least two things I don’t want to do – just for exercise; I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt – they may be hurt but today I will not show it.
Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticise not one bit, not find fault with anything, and not try to improve or regulate anybody but myself.
Just for today I will have a programme. I may not follow it exactly but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests – hurry and indecision.
Just for today I will have a quiet half-hour all by myself and relax. During this half-hour, sometime, I will try and get a better perspective of my life.
Just for today I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe that, as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.
Just for today I will not gamble
Now not even a saint could do all of them all of the time. Just pick one or two and do them. It works better if you pick one that you know will be hard to do! 🙂
I can remember in my early days or recovery this was away of building back up self esteem etc by doing and achieving something positive. It was a good thing to focus on and fill my time. it was and remains a way of addressing some of the not so good charater traits that addiction had built up. It was a way of working recovery as opposed to “just” stopping gambling.
Go on, pick one. Let us know how you get on.19 June 2014 at 8:36 pm #7552
Hi, in one of the groups this evenign we were talking about the importance of positive achievements so I promised to bump this up.
Just pick one or two and do them. They are all positive and all achieveable. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to do them all at once though – not even a saint could do that and the important thing is to achieve them, not set ourselves up for another failure.19 June 2014 at 9:28 pm #7553lorraineParticipant
As i read some of them i could feel my anxiety go up ,so re read and reread them and well i seem to like the one that says
Just for today i know i will have a program ,and i may not follow it exactly but i will have it .
It tells me it understands all my other issues ,and just for today if this is all you can do then thats okay.
Whoops slow down ,slow down ,and add one more in .
How come i never saw these before hmmm.
The hardest one for me would be the one just for today i will be agreeable one .eeks sounds exhausting to me.lol but thats the ugly side of me ,my wall of proctection to my dirty world of gambling secrets.
So maybe number two can be Just for today i will be unafraid.19 June 2014 at 10:04 pm #7554
