Yesterday I lost hundreds of dollars on a sporting event. It is so dumb when I think about it. I thought I had an edge only to learn minutes before the game that certain players were sitting out. This is sports betting in a nutshell. I tell myself it makes it more fun but the games I bet on I can’t even watch. I can’t watch because I literally start to feel sick. This disease is bad and I need help but unsure of where to turn. I hope posting and being honest will help keep things in check. Before the start of each day, I will come up with a plan to avoid gambling. It may or may not help but I need to try. Day one is today and I will let you know the outcome. I need to keep telling myself I will not bet today. Live Well.

and I notice that you have commented on others’ threads – so I am assuming you have read around the site and know what you need to do.
You wrote: « This disease is bad and I need help but unsure of where to turn … »
Well you have taken the first step, by admitting to yourself and to us on the site that you have a problem with gambling.
The things you need to do are a) exclude yourself from places where you gamble (and might be tempted to gamble in the future.) b) carry the minimum amount of money you need for day to day life – in order to put a barrier between yourself and your next bet. c) Get as much support for yourself as possible – whether that be friends, family, self-help like GA or counselling. d) Find other ways to spend your time away from gambling – and in your case I would say away from sports, as watching a game – especially in the early days will probably be a trigger for you. Sports where you can test yourself will be fine though.
I look forwards to your next post. -

Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!
Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.
As well as the forums New Members are invited to join Charles in the New Members Practical Advice Group On Mondays at 21:00 (UK) and Thursday at 19:00(UK)
And on that note….
I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂
Take care

Half way to my first non-betting day. I looked at odds and started watching sports but lost interest and turned it off. About to get in some exercise and go for swim.

Congrats on seven days bro! I know it’s not easy. Payday is always the toughest day for me. Appreciate the advice and keep up the good work.

I was betting on sports since 18yo and it was a disaster since then. I thought that I know almost everything about soccer, but my money disappeared from my pocket with every game.

And I tried to get rid of this addiction many times, but the only person that could help me was my mother. She passed away just a few months ago and it’s hard to control myself now…

The worst thing in betting on sports is that you can’t escape it as faster as usual gambling. You see sports everywhere – ads, matches, game results, and you wanna bet.

Hello everyone, I am currently new here. I have a terrible addiction to gambling. It all started as fun, then I gambled without having to borrow or worry because I was careful. Now 3 years down the line, it has grown to be a terrible habit. I stopped for some months between May to June, 2020. I thought I had fully recovered only for me to run into money problems. Immediately this happened, I resorted to gambling again. Since then, my debts kept piling up and up. Now, the mess is quite big and I am looking for a way out asides from gambling it out. I hope this forum will help me to stop this habit totally.
