I have known about my problem for a few years. But I didn’t think I had a problem until it started effecting my family. I am now scared at the chance of losing them forever. I don’t know why I do it just the chance of winning big is the lure. It is destroying my life. I don’t spend money I havent got but I am spending money I shouldn’t. I have tried to explain why to my partner but I can’t because I have no reason. She doesn’t understand I can’t blame her it’s not her problem.

Hello Danis and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums
Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties youre currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if youre new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. Were in this together!
Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like youre not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.
And on that note….
Im going to hand you over to our community because Im sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂
Take care

Hi Dan and welcome, Well done on looking for help.
I’m sure you will be reading some of the other stories here so i expect you will have seen a lot you can relate to. You will also have seen some of the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation? It’s hard to explain an addiction to a non addict, after all even an addict might not be able to explain it themselves! Maybe show your partner this forum, she will see that you aren’t alone and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. She can also get support for herself in the Friends and family forum.
What barriers can you put in place? Where do you gamble? Get yourself banned. how do you finance gambling – make yourself accountable, could your partner help with that? Then keep posting, tell us the positive steps you are taking, tell us how you are filling your gamble free time.

It has really surprised me the support in place here first steps taken online accounts closed and temptation removed by transferring money to partners account

Well done on the steps you have already taken. As well as closing those accounts I’d think about actually asking them to ban you, that way you can’t reopen them if you get tempted in the future. Maybe even get a blocker for your PC.
Having your partner hold your money is a good move, it’ll help you stop gambling and also help rebuild the trust. it’s still your money of course, just that being accountable will stop you gambling it.
Keep posting.

Is blocking the account not pointless as there is always another site or bookie I am finding messaging on here helps knowing I’m not alone removing the temptation removing the lure is 80% the other 20% is in my head

You can get a blocker for your PC, gamblock.com or others, it stops you connecting to any gambling site. You are right of course, barriers aren’t the total answer to addiction but they give you a breathing space while you work on other things.

Well done on seeking help, navigating the Site and finding the chat group, Dan.
One day at a time, without handing money is the safest way to get trough the early days.
Everything in your life will improve when you stop gambling. Not immediately but you will see gradual changes.
Lots of help here but no magic wands!
You have hit the ground running, just in time for a G free July! -

Welcome to GT Dan. This site is amazing and is one of the reasons why am on day 97 without a bet but more than that I have learned on here what recovery can be. Abstinence is not recovery. Stick around, there is true knowledge here that can and could save your life.
My love to you.
