Hello. Here’s a brief introduction of myself.
I’m a 20 year old male from Singapore, in south-east Asia and I have a poker addiction. This post is what I hope to be the trigger to the end of the bullsh*t I’ve put myself and the people around me through.I’ve been playing poker for 4-5 years now, starting from .1/.2 games to 1/2 games. It all started from a game between friends, and escalated speedily to home games with strangers. The memory of losing $16 during the very first poker session I played is still vivid, I was horrified. Most recently, I lost a cumulative amount of around $1k these 2 weeks. I’m in debt to people close to me and it brings a sinking feeling to my gut, to think that I’ve imposed the consequences of my habit onto the ones I love. My banks are essentially empty and I can’t clear my debt anytime soon.
What scares me the most is that I’ve forgotten the value of money. $50 is not $50, but 25% of my one buy in at a 1/1 game. There are so many things that that sum of money can buy, but not the thrill that poker gives me. It’s not so much about winning than being able to play the game without losing to me. Countless friends have been made through poker and some I have gotten close to and are amazing people, and I don’t want to lose them.
I know I’m a losing player, but the loss wears off after each session and I go back to it once again.
I don’t really know why I’m here either, but I hope you guys can push me in the right direction so I know where to put my next foot forward.

Welcome to this site. I spent a lot of time reading through the posts here and i believe you can find a lot of help in the stories of others. There is a good life to be had away from gambling. You can change your circumstances very quickly when you choose to live that life that is waiting for you away fromthe poker table. There are new experiences and new friends to be made as well. If you want to change your life, you are the only one that can do it. The debts won’t go away overnight, but you can bet that continuing to play is not going to make them better. I hope you are thinking of ways to say no to the next game. You can do it!

Hi Magnus. I see you posted and got a little advice a couple of weeks ago now. Did you manage to find that GA meeting? Did you speak to your dad again? He could help with accountability, maybe look after your money for a while so you can’t access it for gambling.
Those ”countless friends” you have made through playing poker? If they are true friends won’t you be able to do other non gambling activities with them? I had a lot of ”friends” i used to gamble with. Whilst some of them were true friends many turned out to be just gambling acquaintances.
Use the support you have here, keep posting

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. A month on and I’m still almost in the same situation as before. It’s so difficult to gather the willpower to consistently stay as far away from gambling as possible and to prevent myself from going back to it after days/weeks, but I’m trying.

I still haven’t gotten around to the GA meeting yet. A month on and I’m still stuck in the same rut, chasing losses. I’m making a resolution today to stop gambling at least until I pay off all my debts, a baby step I hope I will be able to follow through.
I’ve briefly told my dad that I have ’money issues’ but he doesn’t know that I’ve still been gambling regularly and told me to be more responsible with what I have.
My social life is nonexistent as of now and the only interactions I have with people are my family and the people at the poker table. It’s an obsession that all of us have in common and leeches our complete and undivided attention and time.
I hope that I will be able to push myself to take a step in the right direction.. starting today.

Founded in 2004, ONE HOPE CENTRE is a faith-based non-profit voluntary welfare organisation setup to help members of the public (regardless of race and religion) who are affected by problem gambling and related issues, through counselling, support groups, education and intervention with an aim to restore life to normalcy.
The consequences from compulsive gambling that often lead to being heavily indebted, create a host of other problems that include anxiety, fear, family crisis and social ills. One Hope Centre hopes to alleviate these consequences by providing hope amidst hopelessness.
Over the years, OHC has handled hundreds of cases related to compulsive gambling and reckless borrowing. These have provided us with a good understanding of how best to reach out to the affected. Our accumulated experience from conducting support groups, individual and family counselling, as well as recovery programs enables us to take a holistic approach to the recovery of our clients.

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
Chapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost … I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place
but, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in … it’s a habit.
my eyes are open
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.Chapter 4
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.Chapter 5
I walk down another street.Copyright (c) 1993, by Portia Nelson from the book There’s A Hole in My Sidewalk.
